AMAZING TECH BANGLA
Freelancing refers to a type of work arrangement where individuals, known as freelancers or independent contractors, offer their services to clients or companies on a project basis, without being employed by them on a long-term basis. Freelancers have the freedom to choose their own clients, set their rates, and decide when and where they want to work.
The top AMAZING TECH BANGLA work for students includes social media management, website creation, graphic design, content writing, photography and videography, video editing, and online teaching. Students can earn quick cash by working these occupations part-time for a few hours each week.
It allows you complete control of your workload, choose your clients, and decide how much time you dedicate to working and how much to leisure time. This level of freedom and control is unparalleled and doesn't exist in many other career.
There is no specific age limit for freelancing, but you must be at least 18 years old to enter into a legally binding contract. If you are under 18, you may still be able to work as a freelancer as long as you have a parent or guardian's permission and supervision.
What is an example of a freelancer.
An example of a freelancer would be an independent journalist who reports on stories of their own choosing and then sells their work to the highest bidder. Another example is a web designer or an app developer who does one-time work for a client and then moves on to another client.
If you want to get your first freelance job your best bet is to go where the jobs are. Freelance platforms, like Work for Impact, give you access to a wide range of freelance job postings. You can quickly and easily find jobs that you're qualified for and submit proposals to potential clients.
Freelancing is a great way to have a side hustle and make some extra money. But before you start freelancing, it is important to understand the terms of your work contract. You need to review the contract carefully and make sure that you are not violating any of its terms by taking on any side hustles online.
Being a subject matter expert (SME) or having a recognized qualification will support the algorithm. And when your clients have a better chance of ranking in search engines, the happier they'll be. That said, you don't need to have formal qualifications to have a successful freelance writing career
Anyone with an in-demand skills and working internet connection can be a freelancer. On why freelancing is a great option, Shahedul said, “Many 9-to-5 corporate jobs offer the starting salary of Tk 25,000-Tk 30,000, whereas you can easily earn over Tk 40,000 every month from freelancing.
Freelancing can be a tough job in many ways. Freelancing is not a ticket to an easy life. It comes with perks, but it also has pitfalls. Some people can handle these well, while some can not.
Freelancing is super flexible, in the sense that you could do one small job a week or build up to doing more work compared to the average full-time job. This growth potential allows you to build up as much work as you want, providing valuable skill-building in time management and organization.
For as long as the work is done satisfactorily and the client is happy, the sense of satisfaction is there and you get to enjoy this high while keeping a healthy work-life balance. However, that is not to say that freelancing is equivalent to a 100% stress-free lifestyle. For more informationwww.youtube.com/amazingtechbanglaplease visit here.

Meanwhile, in the land of HIKvision
*Kinda digging this guy’s subscribable newsletter about Chinese AI.
Welcome to the ChinAI Newsletter!
***Two meta-updates:
1) The goal: every ChinAI issue is a joint effort where my collaborator helps with translation and/or commentary and (most importantly) plays a quasi-editorial role (*more on why I think newsletters may need editors later on). Toward that end, part of the subscription fees will go toward compensating contributors for their work ($100-200 each issue depending on the length and quality of the translation + analysis + editing). If you’ve got a translation/topic to pitch, or you’re interested in learning more about how to contribute, just reply to this email!
2) I want the main incentive for readers to subscribe to be to support access to good content for all (in the mold of The Guardian or Wikipedia), but folks have also pointed out that it would be nice for subscribers to have certain perks (some have suggested making the archiveonly available to subscribers). A middle ground I’m exploring that still guarantees access to each issue for everyone but gives a little extra to subscribers is to put together a master library of all the Google doc translations, curated by category and shared with subscribers.
The good news is we’re at 40 subscribers & 5400+ free email list readers. I rely completely on word-of-Tweet/email for promotion, so thanks for spreading the word. I’m playing around with options (right now it’s $9 for a monthly subscription and $50 for a yearly subscription) and would appreciate feedback.
These are Jeff Ding's (sometimes) weekly translations of Chinese-language musings on AI and related topics. Jeff is a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, PhD candidate in International Relations, Researcher at GovAI/Future of Humanity Institute, and Research Fellow at the Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
Feature Translation: is Winter Coming for Hikvision?
Is winter coming for Hikvision, the world’s largest manufacture of video surveillance products and solutions? In this week’s feature translation, one Chinese investor (he holds shares in Hikvision and goes by the handle Blitzbear) argues the Night King is already inside Hikvision’s gates.
I’m very grateful to Charles Rollet, a freelance journalist who also works as a researcher with IPVM (the leading publication covering the video surveillance industry) for adding his comments throughout the Google doc full translation and letting me include some of his analysis in the key takeaways below. Check out his fantastic portfolio — which includes many in-depth stories on Hikvision.
If you’re like me, then Hikvision is probably one of those Chinese companies you hear mentioned in the news — for their role in the repression of Uyghurs in Xinjiang or for being one of two Chinese companies (Dahua is the other) targeted by a Congressional ban on U.S. federal agencies purchasing new equipment — but you don’t really know much about beyond that.
Enter our (relatively knowledgeable but probably biased) guide —Blitzbear, a Chinese investor who used to hold a decent chunk of shares in Hikvision before selling most of them and holding on to a small part to “use as an observation deck.” He spent a weekend reading Hikvision’s half-year report and came away very disappointed with Hikvision’s performance. Key takeaways:
— Blitzbear highlights two main issues: 1. Can Hikvision find commercialization pathways for intelligent security in video surveillance? 2. What’s the deal with Hikvision’s cash flow and all the loans it’s taking on?
— On the first question, Blitzbear argues that Hikvision is not making the transition from selling products and “eyes” (cameras were 47.7% of total revenue this period) to selling cloud intelligence services and “brains” that can connect cameras and hardware to the cloud computing models via 5G networks — especially in projects that can be replicated in different data application scenarios.
— A key structural trend that supports the first point: high-end cameras that support facial recognition and other AI services are becoming cheaper, so Hikvision can’t just rely on these cameras anymore and they need to get on the AI track. As Charles notes, “At the U.S.’ largest security camera trade show, I saw $59 facial recognition cameras for sale with an $8 per month app subscription.”
— On the second question, Blitzbear highlights Hikvision’s massive increase in short-term debt (an increase of 3.4 billion RMB throughout 2018 and an additional 1.1. billion in 2019 so far). Interestingly, some of its long-term loans came through a public-private partnership (PPP) or Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT) scheme. In laypersons terms, Hikvision goes to the Chinese (subnational) government entity who is looking to do a surveillance project and says, “Since you will be paying me later, you might as well first lend me the money, and I will take it to make and build the surveillance infrastructure, and then you can pay me less later.”
— Crucially, in this period, Hikvision signed six projects according to this scheme (around 1 billion RMB in total pledged loans) and all were surveillance projects in Xinjiang. See Ipvm’s excellent coverage of Hikvision’s projects in Xinjiang, which include cameras for re-education camps and hundreds of mosques. Blitzbear highlighted one such project signed this year with Luopu, a sparsely populated rural county of about 280,000 (almost entirely Uyghur); I dug into Hikvision’s interim report to find the other five, which are listed in the full translation.
— Charles also added some critiques of this piece. This was one of the benefits of getting his “editing” because I often get too attached to each week’s piece (from spending time translating and getting into the head of the author). Charles writes, “A huge omission here is that Hikvision faces much more direct threats, in terms of possible US sanctions over its Xinjiang activities. This could put them in a Huawei-like situation.” Another flaw in the piece, according to Charles: “When you hear talk of Hikvision's financial issues, always keep in mind that Hikvision's controlling shareholder is the Chinese government, so it's unlikely it would be allowed to flounder like a normal private firm,” and “Chinese government video surveillance spending is still huge; whether that gravy train ever stops or slows down is an issue unaddressed by this article.”

Empty Streets and Neon Lights | Bildungsroman Challenge
Hey, so I finally finished the sequel to Sea Turtles, and because it lined up so nicely with the challenge I decided to use this as my submission. I specifically focused on the themes of these quotes:
“I wondered if that’s how forgiveness budded; not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.”
- Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner
“Because things change. And friends leave. And life doesn’t stop for anybody.”
-Stephen Chbosky, Perks of Being a Wallflower
“You have to accept that sometimes that’s how things happen in this world. People’s opinions, their feelings, they go one way, then the other. It just so happens you grew up at a certain point in this process.”
- Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go

summary: Jeongguk tries to find his place in Seoul's art scene as well as the balance between JK, the artist, and himself. But how can he do that when he doesn't even know his real self; maybe the real Jeongguk is still in America, reliving all those Moments he's tried so hard to forget, and when his hand hurts too much to actually create anything, can he even call himself an artist?
Jeongguk, a freelance artist, at some sort of science-y convention with his chemist friend, Jimin. He doesn’t want to be here, he finds things like this painfully disinteresting, but Jimin didn’t want to come alone, and Jeongguk supposes he does kind of owe him, seeing as Jimin has attended almost every single one of his pop-up galleries and exhibitions. Also, he promised to buy Jeongguk dinner.
“Stop scowling,” Jimin pinches his arm, creating a briefly noticeable crease on Jeongguk’s nice, situationally appropriate white button-up.
“I’m not,” He hisses, flinching away from Jimin and smoothing over his sleeve.
“You are,” Jimin insists, and he’s honestly probably right. “You look like you hate everyone here because one time you held the door for them and they didn’t say ‘thank you’ or something,” Okay that’s fair.
Jeongguk would’ve been annoyed regardless, he doesn’t understand most of this stuff, so he probably would’ve spent the evening scrolling through various social media platforms and maybe lowkey stalking the couple thousand fans who follow his art instagram. He doesn’t really stalk them, he just goes through and tries to pick out if any of the accounts are other artists or journalists or something along those lines. Anyway, the point is he would’ve been bored if it was any other topic, but this conference is about the ocean, and Jeongguk is leaning more towards irritated rather than passively annoyed.
Jimin conveniently forgot to mention that this conference is geared towards the ocean, finding new ways to clean it up and what not, and Jeongguk hates the ocean, hates the beach. Okay, maybe he doesn’t hate it, he just tries his best to avoid anything to do with the marine world. This all really is a noble cause because yes, the ocean is a mess and could do with some light spring cleaning, but he’d just rather be left out of it all, if he’s being totally honest.
In the art gallery of Jeongguk’s mind, where memories hang like paintings and decorate the hallways - all Good, Bad, and In Between Moments - he doesn’t want to think of the room holding every Moment he wants to forget. A room roped off and where the lights of his consciousness went out years ago and he hasn’t yet bothered to change the bulbs; everything is perpetually dark and dusty, almost each Moment is from his one semester in America. He doesn’t want to remember anything he shoves in that room, but perhaps above all, he doesn’t want to remember the boy with oceans in his eyes.
But here he is, trying to follow Jimin while staring intently at his back or messing around on his phone, anything to ignore the innocent enough posters depicting dolphins leaping from the water, sea turtles on a shore, or shells half-buried in the sand, because each time he catches a glimpse, the lights flicker just the slightest before going dark again.
Jeongguk tried to forget, he really did, but for months after they’d come home, it hurt. He couldn’t visit the beach in the early morning with his mother to pick up shells, he couldn’t tag along with Jimin and their friend group for beach parties or bonfires, all because he couldn’t be there without remembering.
So he tried to bury everything and pretend like America never happened, and eventually succeeded, to a point. After breaking down with Jimin, he began actively forcing away thoughts of him; he buried the memories as deep as he could, and pushed everything into that room in the back of his gallery to be shut away and ignored. But they were still there, and this conference was threatening to bring them up to the surface.
Jimin leads him through a set of double doors into a room where the floor goes from beige tiles to flat carpet that’s got to have a hundred or more chairs, facing an elevated podium. Someone is supposed to speak - there was a poster outside probably, but Jeongguk was too busy focusing on Jimin’s back to notice. They take their seats, choosing the last row because even though Jimin is somewhat small, he doesn’t really need to see the presenter. Also, if they sit in the last row, the pair can whisper to each other without eyes boring into their backs, and Jeongguk can be on his phone without too much judgement. Jeongguk busies himself with a pointless match-three game, the seats fill, and eventually someone steps up to the podium and provides an introduction of the speaker. Jeongguk doesn’t hear the speaker’s name or any of the introduction, probably because he doesn’t care to pay attention, but when he starts talking, Jeongguk recognizes his voice, the lazy syllables all too familiar. Jeongguk’s head jerks up to see none other than Min Yoongi standing at the podium, speaking with the force of the ocean in his words about something - he’s too panicked to listen. His heart stops, Jimin speaks next to him.
“Isn’t that-” Jimin begins asking, then takes one look at Jeongguk’s wide eyes and sudden pallor. “Yeah okay, bathroom,” He whispers and tugs on Jeongguk’s arm, and they sneak out of the lecture and across the convention center to the restrooms. It’s noisy and crowded, people milling around different exhibits and speaking over each other as scientists do when they have a point to prove, and Jeongguk suddenly feels small. As an artist he is very out of his element here. He reaches out a hand to grasp Jimin’s sleeve, and lets himself be led through the maze of bodies, too many wearing white lab coats, and when they finally reach it, Jeongguk locks himself in a stall and dry heaves, nothing comes out.
Jimin leans casually against the sink when Jeongguk lets himself out of the stall, arms crossed and eyes holding thinly veiled concern.
“You okay?” Jeongguk shakes his head and proceeds to splash cold water on his face because maybe this is all a horribly fucked up dream or like, three nightmares in one. “Thought so, I really can’t leave, but how about you take an uber home and I’ll see you there?”
Jeongguk nods. It’s not like he really has a choice, because Jimin had apparently already ordered the car and it’s there by the time Jeongguk composes himself enough to exit the bathroom - Jimin had locked it, much to the dismay of other attendants; Jeongguk tries not to think of the assumptions behind two men locking themselves in the bathroom, about how that looks to everyone else. He sends Jeongguk off with a gentle squeeze to the swell of his shoulder, and then Jeongguk watches through the window as he rushes back up the stone steps, probably back to the presentation. He leans his head against the glass as the city passes by, street lights and skyscrapers and nameless, faceless strangers all merging together into one stereotypical young adult novel introduction. Rain drizzles gently, fat drops rolling lazily down the windshield, and Jeongguk loses himself watching their trails. He thinks back to when he was a kid, and he would imagine the drops to be racing one another.
“Rough night?” The driver - a brunette woman with her hair cut to a short bob - asks, eyes meeting his in the rearview mirror.
“Something like that,” He mumbles, leaning forward and pressing his head against the back of the passenger seat.
“A girl?” She asks, and he grunts in disagreement. “Oh, a guy?” This is Korea, Jeongguk should not have boy troubles.
“Mhm,” She laughs quietly. “How’d you guess?”
“You look like you’ve just had your heart broken,” No, he just saw the person who broke it years ago for the first time, and he thought he’d gotten over it; but maybe he didn’t, maybe seeing Yoongi up there on the podium lit his gallery like a Christmas tree and broke it all over again. He doesn’t answer because Uber rides aren’t supposed to include personal conversation, and she turns on the radio to fill the silence.
By the time he’s left in front of the apartment he shares with Jimin, the rain has stopped, the air is muggy and thick, and the wet pavement appears to give off its own light as it reflects street lamps and headlights. It’s the type of night he could get lost in, where he could walk around for hours just thinking, but he’s exhausted, and he’s seen enough dramas to know what happens when you walk the streets and a past love happens to be in the city, so he sighs and walks up the steps, buzzing to let himself into the complex and taking the stairs up to the fourth floor, where he kicks off his loafers and collapses on the couch.
For months, everything he painted had to do with the ocean. Animals, landscapes, everything had some connection to the marine world, to Yoongi, and he hated it because somehow each piece was perfect. As a college junior, some of his pieces were being featured in actual galleries, not the mock presentations all students participated in, ones where people paid to see his work.
His best work was a landscape of the beach at night, with soft moonlight illuminating ocean swells and the beach vegetation appearing to sway gently and stars dotting the night sky - people loved it, called it surreal, hyperrealistic, a masterpiece. He’d spent weeks working on it, and apparently his dedication showed, because people told him how beautiful it was, how they could imagine themselves in the scene, and Jeongguk had to bite his tongue because no, they couldn’t. Jimin was the only one with context, and after he saw the painting for the first time, he sighed and helped cover it with a sheet and lean it carefully against the wall, where it remained until it was time for showing.
Everyone loved it, but Jeongguk hated it because Yoongi was in every fucking stroke - and though Jimin too thought it was beautiful, he hated it right along with him because that’s what friends are for. He received his highest mark on that painting, and his professor recommended it for an exhibition, and Jeongguk spent the entire night outside, a glass of champagne abandoned on the railing next to him because he couldn’t bear to go inside and see his own work with a small plaque next to it reading:
Title: Confession
Artist: JK
Medium: Watercolor
So he waited outside, nameless faces approached and complimented him, and when it was finally over and everything was being cleaned up and put away, he went in to find a small pink tag hanging off his plaque - someone had made an offer. He didn’t ask who or how much, just let employees take it away, he never wanted to see it again.
When Jimin returns nearly two hours later, Jeongguk is sitting alone at their four person dining table with an open bottle of wine and wine glass in front of him; he’s both the optimist and the pessimist: the bottle is half empty, his glass is half full. This is a Bad Moment, he’s just tipsy enough that the earlier shock of seeing Yoongi has ebbed away, and his eyes droop just barely; Jimin sighs when he sees him.
“That bad?” He asks, stepping out of his shoes and into a pair of slippers.
“Mhm,” Jeongguk hums, swirling his glass. Jimin simply shakes his head, then goes into the kitchen and retrieves a glass for himself. He sits across from Jeongguk and tips the wine into his glass, filling it halfway.
“I had no idea he’d be there,” Jimin says after a moment of contented silence - well, it’s contented on Jeongguk’s end, anyway.
“It’s fine, I don’t blame you,” He takes a sip of his wine, wincing slightly at the bitterness.
They’re drinking a cheap red tonight out of stemmed wine glasses, which isn’t right honestly, because red is supposed to be drank from stemless glasses, as it’s served room temperature. White wine is meant to be served chilled, and is drank from stemmed glasses to keep it from getting warm from being held.
“I thought you got over him,” Jimin says, and Jeongguk knows he’s been waiting until the right time to broach the subject of himself and Yoongi and what exactly happened way back then, what better time than now?
“I wanted to but, I just kinda, buried it all, you know?” He takes a long drink from his glass, draining it despite the bitterness and reaching for the bottle, to pour himself another glass. “I didn’t want to think about him, about any of that.”
“You know that’s not how you deal with things, this isn’t how you deal with things,” Jimin leans his glass forward, and Jeongguk clinks his glass against it even though there’s nothing to be toasting.
“I know, but it’s easier.”
“So, we’re back at square one, then. Do you still have a thing for him?” Jeongguk pretends he doesn’t hear the question, instead he lays his arm out across the table, resting his head on it as his other hand toys with the edge of the wine glass. “Jeongguk, we need to talk about this.”
“I hate him,” Yoongi has made it to where Jeongguk, born in Busan, can’t be near the ocean. Can’t even think about it.
“So you do.”
“I don’t know.”
“Let’s go to bed,” Jimin hasn’t even touched his wine, he takes both glasses and dumps them down the sink, then shoves the cork back in the dark bottle and puts in the refrigerator. Jeongguk slides out of his seat and heads to his bedroom, where he collapses into the comforting security only his bed can provide.
Jimin comes in, sighs, and makes Jeongguk get up and undress because apparently it’s not a good idea to sleep in a button-up and slacks. He sits on the edge of Jeongguk’s bed, speaking mostly to himself.
“It’s fine that you hate him, I mean, no one can control that. But you gotta get over him, you can’t let what happened control you. I know a lot of your best art came out of it, but I mean, come on, when was the last time you went to the beach? Hell, the last time you even dated someone?”
Jeongguk hasn’t dated anyone since Yoongi, hasn’t dated anyone in six years. He can’t. He’s still stuck and maybe a little bit afraid when it comes to the topic of his romantic life, and that’s because after all these years, he still hasn’t figured himself out. Is he straight? Gay? Both? Neither? He doesn’t know, he hasn’t tried to find out. He slept with one girl when he came back, one, and the entire time he wasn’t thinking about her, but am I gay? He can’t, not completely if he made out with a guy more than once. But he’s tired, in no mood to deal with these thoughts right now, so he listens to Jimin talk speak and his eyes droop steadily. Before he’s out completely, Jimin tugs his duvet over him. He’s a good friend, Jeongguk should keep him around.

You may be wondering, can I transfer downloaded movies from Netflix? Yes, another way to download movies and TV show episodes from Netflix on your Mac is to utilize the in-built QuickTime player to allow mirroring of the streaming on your iPhone/iPad to Mac desktop. Remember though that this process is less straightforward.
Initially, you must prepare a lightning USB cable, a Mac that is equipped with the QuickTime Player and an iOS device the is updated to iOS 11 or higher.
The next move is to follow these steps to download movies on Netflix on Mac and how to access Netflix download files:
Link your iPhone/iPad to your Mac using the Lightning-to-USB cable.

Tap on the File on the upper part of the screen and select the “New Movie Recording” option. If you want a shortcut, simply press “Option+Command+N”
In the control panel, tap on the down-arrow icon next to the record button. Under the Microphone and Camera sections, select iPhone or iPad where you are playing the Netflix show. Netflix for Windows 8 is an alternative way to access your Netflix account offering an interesting way to interact using a touch screen.
The layout of Netflix for Windows 8 is rather different from the web site or other ways you may use the online video streaming service. For one, it doesn't seem to be as fast as the web site and counts as a drawback.
Upon launching the 'Metro' app, you are greeted with recently watches TV shows and movies. Moving along, you are given a ton of different suggestions based on your online profile, mainly sorted by how popular certain movies, documentaries, television shows and others are with other users.
Watching a movie with Netflix for Windows 8 does not provide many additional options and the app will automatically select the bitrate (quality) it determines your Internet connection to be able to handle. You may also select from available audio languages and subtitles from the media bar when activated by moving your mouse or touching the screen.
The search function here isn't that good, perhaps because the application itself is rather sluggish. When done waiting for search results to show you, you can select the show to watch but nothing more.
Overall, the touch interface of Netflix on a system running the 'Start Screen' isn't that intuitive but watching movies and searching is possible as well as being able to select from a small list of playback options.

U.K. Sanctions, Facebook, Jair Bolsonaro: Your Tuesday Briefing
(Want to get this briefing by email? Here’s the sign-up.)
Good morning.
We’re covering Britain’s new sanctions on human rights abuses, discrimination against Europe’s Roma and a revival of Italy’s pawnshops.
They are the first sanctions that Britain has imposed since leaving the European Union in January — a move officials hope will cast the country as a human rights defender.
Among the 47 people who face travel bans and frozen assets in Britain: Russians accused of having involvement in the death of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, and Saudis accused of assassinating the Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi. The list did not include any Chinese officials.
What it means: Being blacklisted will probably not change the lives of those named and many are already blacklisted by the U.S. But sanctions are a weapon that Britain could use in the future on Chinese officials who are involved in Uighur internment or the crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.
Officials cite medical risks. But for many Roma, the lockdown exemplifies a centuries-old bigotry that has deepened in parts of Europe during the pandemic. Other places with similar caseloads in Bulgaria, they say, have not had such restrictions.
Quote of note: “It’s pure prejudice,” said Angel Iliev who tried to collect water at a spring beyond a checkpoint but was turned away by the police. “The discrimination was already bad, but now it’s even worse because of the pandemic.”
In other coronavirus news:
The U.S. is still in the pandemic’s first wave, its top infectious disease expert warned on Monday, with more than 250,000 new cases announced nationwide in the first five days of July alone. Deaths have surpassed 130,000.
Jair Bolsonaro, the Brazilian president and noted coronavirus skeptic, said Monday that he would take a new test for the virus after developing symptoms of Covid-19.
Israel closed bars, gyms and pools and curtailed gatherings as positive test results reached new heights.
New up-and-coming coronavirus tests, like the gene-editing tool Crispr, can spot the virus in less than an hour. But it will most likely be months before these tests hit clinics.
For millions of low-paid workers from Asia and Africa running Arab households, the pandemic has exacerbated the dangers of conditions that rights groups say can lead to exploitation and abuse.
The coronavirus is accelerating the shift to cashless transactions, with governments in India, Kenya, Sweden and other countries promoting digital payment for public health reasons.
Here are the latest coronavirus updates and maps of the outbreaks.
Facebook won’t turn over Hong Kong user data
Facebook and its messaging service WhatsApp will temporarily stop processing Hong Kong government requests for user data while it reviews the national security law imposed by China.
The company said it would consult human rights experts to assess the law. The decision is a rare questioning of Chinese policy by an American internet company, and targets the question of how the security law will apply online.
Telegram, another popular messaging app, said on Sunday that it would refuse requests from the Hong Kong authorities for user data until an international consensus was reached on the new law.
What’s next: Facebook’s move puts pressure on other tech giants, like Apple, Google and Twitter, to clarify how they will deal with the Hong Kong security law.
Related: Xu Zhangrun, a Chinese professor at the prestigious Tsinghua University, was arrested on Monday in Beijing — one of the few academics in China who have harshly criticized the ruling Communist Party.
Russia: A Russian military court on Monday convicted a freelance journalist on charges of “justifying terrorism” in a 2018 text critical of the security services. It tightened the screws on free speech, and even the Kremlin’s human rights council denounced the charges.
If you have 8 minutes, this is worth it
A pawnshop revival in Italy
Italians are turning to a safety net they have relied on for centuries through plagues, sieges, wars and downturns: putting up their valuables as collateral for loans. Pawnshops, above, an official part of the Italian banking system, saw activity increase from 20 to 30 percent immediately after the country’s lockdown because of the coronavirus.
“When things are going well, you can buy your stuff back,” said Claudio Lorenzo, who had pawned his and his wife’s wedding rings. “When things are going bad, you can’t.”
Snapshot: Above, a conductor on the Tshiuetin line, the first railroad in North America owned and operated by First Nations people, that runs through rural Quebec. Named after the Innu word for “wind of the north,” it is a symbol of reclamation.
Gentrification fight: When a developer tried to evict Nour Cash & Carry, a beloved grocer in south London, customers organized to save the store, saying its fate symbolized broader changes in the lower-income neighborhood.
What we’re listening to: The “Floodlines” podcast from The Atlantic about Hurricane Katrina. It “traces the racism-driven response to the Big One with the clarity of 15 years of hindsight,” writes Shaila Dewan, a national reporter and editor covering criminal justice issues.
Now, a break from the news
Cook: This mayo-marinated chicken with chimichurri is perfect for cooking on the grill or in a cast-iron skillet indoors.
Watch: “Grand Designs” is a bit like “The Great British Baking Show,” but in this series, the goal is to build dream homes, not frangipani and iced buns. It’s also deeply human.
Read: “Too Much and Never Enough,” an exposé about President Trump written by his niece, and a memoir from the poet Natasha Trethewey are among the 16 books to watch for in July.
Staying safe at home is easier when you have plenty of things to read, cook, watch and do. At Home has our full collection of ideas.
And now for the Back Story on …
Teaching about racism
Jane Elliott, now 87, came up with a lesson in 1968 to force children to experience prejudice firsthand. She split up her class into two groups based on an arbitrary characteristic: eye color. Those with blue eyes were superior to those with brown eyes, and were entitled to perks, like more recess time and access to the water fountain. Quickly, the children turned on one another. She reversed the roles and saw the same thing.
The anti-racism educator spoke with our In Her Words newsletter about how things have and have not evolved since 1968.
For the past few decades, you’ve been giving anti-racism lectures and workshops around the country. Have you noticed a shift in how they have been received?
I’ve been doing the exercise with adults for about 35 years. But in the last few years, I’ve only been doing speeches about it because we now live in a situation where people turn off immediately if they think they’re going to learn something counter to their beliefs, and I don’t want to be threatened with death anymore. I’m tired of receiving death threats.
Where did you grow up, and when did you come to truly understand the problem of racism in this country?
I was raised on a farm in northeast Iowa. When I went to school, I started to learn the standard elementary curriculum, which is that white men did all the inventing and discovering and civilizing.
Then I went to college, and in my first social studies education class, the white professor stood up in front of that group of students and said, “When you get into the classroom, you must not teach in opposition to local mores.”
A lot of white people are trying to reassess their own biases. Based on the work you’ve done, what can white people do to actually help in this moment?
First of all, you have to realize what I do isn’t hard work. What Black people do is hard work. I get paid for the work that I do.
And second, white people need to stop referring to themselves as “allies” — as if we can make it all right. They need to educate away the ignorance that was poured into them when they were in school and realize that they are the reason everyone is so angry.
That’s it for this briefing. Tips I needed for keeping good habits post-lockdown. See you tomorrow.

Freelancers Could Be Twice as Likely to be Depressed than Office Workers
The benefits of being able to work from anywhere has allowed people to find a work/life balance they are happy with. However, freelancers and remote workers who work alone most of the time are experiencing the negative side of working this way.
According to a new survey from Viking, more than half of the respondents say they feel lonely, anxious and depressed. Even though working as a freelancer has its benefits, human beings are social creatures and working alone for extended periods has negative consequences.
For small businesses that now rely on freelancers as part of their workforce, it is important to know how they feel. Especially if they are going to hire a freelancer for an extended amount of time.
On the blog for the survey, Viking quotes Jenny Stallard, lifestyle journalist and author and founder of Freelance Feels: Wellbeing for Humans who work for themselves. Stallard points out a number of issues freelancers are dealing with, including loneliness.
Stallard goes on to say, “Beating loneliness is not an overnight ‘thing’, and especially not for freelancers, in my experience. There are steps we can all take – and that I’ve taken and take myself – to help us on the road to a less lonely freelance life.”
Of course, it goes beyond loneliness. If you’re a freelancer make sure to take care of yourself by addressing all of the issues the report highlights.
The Survey
Viking surveyed 750 freelancers and 750 office-based workers for a total of 1,500 respondents. The data was then analyzed with the goal of finding out the pros and cons of being a freelancer. Additionally, the study also looks at the effects freelancing has on work-life balance, health and much more.
The respondents were asked to rank the best and worst aspect of working as a freelancer or in an office.
Freelancers say the best aspect of the way they work is flexible working hours, working from home/no commute, being your own boss, easier to organize childcare, and freedom to choose projects and clients. Office workers, on the other hand, say it is job security, socializing with colleagues, the ability to switch off before and after work, holiday allowance, and support with mental health issues.
As to the worst aspect of freelancing, it is feeling lonely at work, struggling to switch off from work, working too many hours, finding consistent work, and lack of support for mental health issues. Office workers say it is working office hours, commuting to work, arranging childcare, booking appointments, and having to work with difficult customers or clients.
Key Takeaways
On the plus side, the freelancers in the survey say they work fewer hours than their office employee counterparts. For 59% of freelancers, their workweek is less than 30 hours, and this has one of the biggest benefits for this group, work/life balance. The same number of office workers (59%) work more than 36 hours per week.
However, the survey points out freelancers are worried about working too many hours. While office workers have a system with structure, such as personal time off, vacations and other perks, freelancers don’t.
A great example of this is vacation time. Only 15% of freelancers actually avoid work during their vacation. This means 85% of them are working while on vacation to a certain degree. This is because most freelancers can’t afford to turn down jobs.
When they do work, freelancers also have to worry about their own billing, payment, insurance, finances and savings. This undoubtedly creates more stress and mental health-related issues, which the survey highlights. Sixty-two percent of freelancers say they feel stressed compared to 55% of office workers.
Freelancing and Mental Health
More than half or 55% of freelancers in the survey say they suffer from depression as a result of their job. The number is almost half as much for office workers at 30%. The task of managing everything along with the loneliness doesn’t help.
Speaking of loneliness close to two thirds or 64% of freelancers say they feel lonely. And for office workers, the number goes down to 29%. This is not surprising, but the fact most freelancers feel lonely is of great concern.
The report goes on to say, the solitary nature of freelancing can lead to loneliness and mental health struggles. It recommends freelancers to talk to someone if the stresses and strains of the job become difficult.

Need Help Thinking of Business Ideas? Use These Examples to Get Started
I’ll spare you the sales pitch about being your own boss.
You’re likely bombarded with enough “life-changing business opportunities” as it is. Some may promise you can work from the beach while taking care of your kids — and maybe you’ll learn Japanese while you’re at it.
What you need is something concrete. A real business idea you can build on that will gradually generate enough income to sustain you. That quick list article you just read, which rattled off about 100 random job titles, probably didn’t help you much.
So here you are, still searching for that perfect business idea.
What Makes a Good Business Idea?
Solid business ideas should be able to withstand some scrutiny. Often, we hold a romanticized view of what it takes to come up with a business idea. Does it need to be a genius invention? A scientific breakthrough? A Shark-Tank-worthy smartphone app?
No.
At their core, good business ideas identify existing problems and offer a solution. Could you solve problems with a scientific breakthrough, a smartphone app or a genius invention? Sure, but you could also take a more workaday approach.
Business ideas don’t have to be glamorous, but they do need to be realistic.
Kathyrn Gratton is the president of the Hagerstown, Maryland, chapter of Score, a free small-business resource network and partner of the federal Small Business Administration. In addition to practicality, she says that your business ideas should revolve around you.
“Where’s your interest? Where’s your passion?” she says, noting that your ideas need to be more than potential moneymaking ventures: You should also enjoy the work to some degree.
Once you think you’ve settled on a good idea, Gratton says, recruit a brutally honest friend to see if it holds any water.
“We all have that friend that will tell you you’ve gotten fat,” she says. “They are the best to run things by. You know they will tell you the truth.”
With that in mind, here are a few well-tested business ideas to get you brainstorming.
Turn Your Current Skills Into Business Ideas
Take a moment to think about what you’re good at.
It could be something you create, niche knowledge about an interesting topic, an artistic ability — anything. Chances are, you’re a master of something, and someone else out there is looking for what you offer. Before you can teach them, entertain them or sell to them, you have to reach them.
Thankfully, the internet has made that part much easier.
Start a Blog
Successful blogging is all about building a dedicated readership. Rarely do people stumble upon that by accident. It takes work to earn the trust and time of readers before you can start raking in profits from a blog. (More on that below).
But what’s good about blogging is that it’s not only for professional writers. If you have an interesting skillset or knowledge about a niche topic, you can use blogs to teach others and launch an online business. For example, if you have a background in arts and crafts — bingo, that’s what your blog should be about.
The most popular blog platform is WordPress, where you can start a blog for free to get your bearings. Once you’re ready to make it more official, you can pay as little as $3 a year to lock-in your domain name and unlock additional features like email addresses and traffic analytics.
In our guide about making money blogging, senior editor Dana Sitar lays out exactly how to build a following for your blog by creating an email list, networking and guest blogging for other well-established publications.
Another way to draw readers to your blog is through search engine optimization (SEO). This is basically writing quality content that ranks high in Google searchers. Coursera offers free online courses in SEO to get a better understanding of the writing techniques you can use in your blog.
Once you have eyes on your blog, how do you monetize it?
Affiliate Marketing
Sitar is a proponent of affiliate marketing.
In short, affiliate marketing works by paying you a commission on a product or service that you write about by using a trackable link that leads readers to make a purchase.
Again, this really only works if you’re honing in on a specific topic. Returning to our arts and crafts idea, through Amazon’s affiliate program, you could link over to a specific sewing machine listing on Amazon.
The whole article probably shouldn’t be about the sewing machine because that’s too salesy, but the link would fit perfectly in a useful story about how to make your own clothes.
When someone makes a purchase through your blog, you make money.
Where’s your interest? Where’s your passion?
Google AdSense
AdSense, which is free to set up, is a popular way to run ads on your site once you have a steady stream of readers. Based on your reader demographic and the topic of your blog, Google will automatically pair you with relevant ads, which you can tailor in size or decline altogether.
How much you earn depends on the type of ad and how your viewers interact with it. (Did they merely see the ad and scroll past it? Or did they click through to the advertiser’s website and make a purchase?)
Once your AdSense account earns $100, you can request a payout.
Patreon
Patreon works a little differently than other crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter or Indiegogo. The underlying idea of all crowdfunding is to connect with strangers all over the world and have them make a donation to your cause, or in this case, your blog.
The difference with Patreon is that it incentivizes recurring donations from fans. This means, in order to monetize your blog with Patreon, you should create some kind of exclusive content for donors — a members-only newsletter, personalized articles, stickers and tees — anything that encourages their ongoing support.
While making a Patreon account is free, the company takes 5% of all donations.
Sell Your Creations in an E-Commerce Store
As brick-and-mortar stores have been closing, e-commerce websites offer entrepreneurs a less risky way of selling their new products. You’re already familiar with Amazon, but there are tons of other ways to sell stuff online.
Once you’re established, you can integrate an online store on your own company’s website, but for starters, try Amazon, eBay or Etsy depending on what you’re selling. These websites are great options for those who make products but don’t want the overhead of a storefront.
It’s free to create a basic account on each of these websites, but they do charge fees once you make a sale:
Amazon: Charges a 99-cent fee for vendors who sell up to 40 items per month. Above that, you’ll need to make a Professional Seller Account for $39.99 a month. Paid accounts aren’t charged the 99-cent fee, but both accounts incur additional selling fees that range between 3% and 45% of the item’s selling price.
eBay: eBay Stores are free if you make under 50 sales per month. After that, a membership is required, which runs between $4.95 and $29,999.95 a month. For each sale, a final-value fee between 2% and 12% is deducted from the selling price.
Etsy: There’s no limit to how many sales can be made on a free Etsy account, but each sale is subject to a flat fee of 20 cents plus 5% of the listing price. Etsy stores in good standing are eligible for an Etsy Plus account that costs $10 a month. This membership includes website customization features, ways to promote your listings, discounts and other perks.
Screenprinting duo Adam and Coryn Enfinger used to design and manually print T-shirts for fun. Then Coryn made an Etsy account to sell their shirts, and their hobby spiraled into a $350,000-a-year business called Dark Cycle Clothing.
Pro Tip
Take high-quality photos of your product, write a thorough item description and take the time to flesh out your seller profile to give customers an authentic sense of who you are.
Coryn chose Etsy because the website caters to more handmade and artistic products. In addition to its online sales, Dark Cycle keeps a presence at several local and regional indie flea markets to make sales in person — an excellent, low-cost way to diversify income for businesses without a centralized location.
Become a Freelancer
When you think of the word freelancer, images of journalists or photographers might flood your mind. But in today’s economy, just about every professional skill can be freelanced ― clerical work, graphic designs, marketing advice. You name it. You just have to know where to find clients.
“Lots of freelancers know how to do their task but not how to run their business,” says veteran freelance business owner Laura Poole. She has more than 20 years of experience running a freelance editing business. In her free time, she travels the nation to speak at conferences and teach freelancers how to better market themselves.
First-time freelancers gravitate toward platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer and Guru. They can help you get a taste of the freelance life, but they shouldn’t be the basis of your freelance business in the long term.
Poole says the sites are extremely helpful in pairing you with clients, but “overall, I think they’re a mixed bag,” she says.
That’s because they charge fees upwards of 20% on each gig. That’s not sustainable. To skirt these fees, it’s going to take more work to gain your independence as a freelancer.
Joining a professional networking organization is a great way to meet people in your field and find clients. Some popular examples include:
ACES Society for Editing, for editors in media and publishing.
AIGA, the professional association for design, for graphic designers and illustrators.
American Advertising Federation, for public relations, advertising, marketing and social media.
Office and Professional Employees International Union, for clerical and administrative fields.
Society of Professional Journalists, for journalism, media and public relations.
Freelancers Union, for all industries.
Whatever your field, search for a professional organization in your state. Join it and use your membership wisely. These organizations typically offer discounts on products, services and software and maintain curated job boards that can help you find clients.
But the events are perhaps the biggest perk. Take advantage of them by networking and presenting, when possible.
“If you can present something useful, [clients] will remember you,” Poole says. “Better than handing out business cards. Better than even placing an ad.”
Build and Teach Online Courses
The online education industry is booming. By 2022, Global Industries Analysts predict that the industry will exceed $241 billion, and you can cash in on that without having any formal teaching experience. As with blogs, you can use online courses as a means to teach what skills you already have.
People, especially working professionals, are looking outside traditional educational institutions to learn. Udemy is one such place. It’s an online education platform that boasts over 30 million registered students. While it’s possible to create a profitable business solely off your Udemy classes, it works best when used in conjunction with your blog or website.
Creating an online instructor profile is free. You’ll need to answer a few questions about your teaching and video-creating experience (neither is required but both will help). Then, you’ll be able to attract students, create videos and upload course materials when you’re ready.
Once you’ve prepared a video course, you can set the price based on Udemy’s scale. And depending on how your students register for the course, you’ll get paid various amounts of the listing price.
97% of the listing price for students you recruited through a trackable link. (The link is why Udemy is best used with a blog or website.)
50% for students who found your course through an organic search on Udemy’s website.
25% for students who registered because you promoted the course on the website.
Make YouTube Videos
Similar to teaching classes on Udemy, YouTube offers video creators a way to monetize their skillset, but the revenue model works a little differently.
According to a Pew Research study, 51% of YouTube viewers use the website to learn things they’ve never done before. And by some estimates, YouTube has about 1.3 billion viewers. The potential is endless here for teaching others your skill or trade, but it will take a bit of setup before you see any money coming in.
Again, plenty of people center their whole business on YouTube, but for the average creator, it is best used in addition to a blog or website, same as Udemy. I.e., embed Youtube videos in your blog post or upload the first few modules of your Udemy course onto YouTube since you already have well-produced videos. Get creative.
To make money on YouTube, you’ll first have to join its YouTube Partner Program (YPP). To qualify, you must already have an account with live videos. As of 2019, your account needs to rack up 1,000 subscribers and hit 4,000 watched hours over the last 12 months before you can earn money from advertisements. When you reach that threshold, you can link your YouTube channel with Google AdSense, where you can curate the types of ads your viewers will see.
After you’re in the YPP program, you’ll be able to add additional revenue streams such as merchandise partnerships, additional brand deals and paid subscriptions from your super fans.
Business Ideas Anyone Can Do
Perhaps you’re not a screenprinter or writer, and you’re having some trouble thinking of niche expertise to peddle. Fret not.
Try some of these more traditional, tried-and-true business ideas to get your enterprise off the ground.
Babysitting, Animal Sitting and other Care Businesses
These businesses stand the test of time. There will always be a need for care, whether it’s for babies, animals or houses. There’s no shortage of side-gig apps for these services, too. Rover, Care.com and Housesitter.com all come to mind.
But this article isn’t about side gigs. While those apps can help you get your start — similar to freelancing platforms — they’re not the end goal. Use them to sharpen your skills, establish a customer base, then launch a full-time business of your own.
To establish yourself and earn the trust of clients, try earning a relevant certification.
For pet care, register with the Professional Animal Care Certification Council. Certifications require some hands-on animal care experience, and it will run you about $350 to take the exam. Certifications last for three years, and you will be logged in the PACCC database, where anyone can verify that you’re legit.
For child care, the American Red Cross offers online and in-person babysitting and advanced-leadership certifications, as well as other credentials like first aid and CPR to set yourself apart.
While there aren’t any legitimate house-sitting credentials on the market, it may put potential clients’ minds at ease if you had a related certification in a topic like fire safety.
These businesses require very little overhead and have the potential to grow quickly. Once you book a client nearby, ask for a referral to expand your services to the whole neighborhood. That will help establish trust from your community and give you an edge over random people from websites or apps.
Cleaning Business
While it may require modest overhead costs, a cleaning business has the potential for long-term, steady work that is easily scalable as you find more customers.
To get started, you’ll obviously need all the staples of house-cleaning equipment — dusters, brooms, mops, a wringer bucket, chemicals, gloves, a vacuum and a solid face mask. For quality materials, that could run you up to $2,000. But you may have most of the equipment already, and much of it doesn’t need to be replaced on a regular basis.
For some, cleaning is a no brainer. But it can definitely get complicated.
What chemicals become toxic when mixed? How do you deal with black mold underneath wallpaper? If you don’t know the answers off the top of your head, it’s a good idea to invest in a membership with the International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association, which offers certifications, training, janitorial insurance, discounts on cleaning supplies and more.
As with many of these options, word-of-mouth advertising works wonders. Start with your neighbors, rack up a few referrals, and soon you’ll be plotting the takeover of your entire block.
Flea Market and Vintage Flipper
Got a good eye for what people want? You can build a business around buying low-cost garage-sale, flea-market or thrift-store items and reselling them online for a sizable profit.
Robert Stephenson, aka the Flea Market Flipper, does just that, and he makes upwards of $80,000 a year working part-time hours. On weekends, he peruses garage sales and thrift stores for a few hours to scout out and buy items that have resell potential. Throughout the week, he fixes them up and lists them on e-commerce sites, particularly eBay.
The only overhead in this business model is the price you pay for the used items and any materials needed to fix them up. To keep startup costs down, you could begin with thrifted clothes that don’t need any repairing and resell them on websites with a vintage aesthetic, such as Poshmark.
Ebay, Amazon and Etsy are all solid options as well.
In our guide to selling on Poshmark, Alison Gary, a successful fashion blogger and Poshmark seller, lays out her advice on making a successful listing:
List multiple pictures.
Haggle for the best price, but know when to say no.
Give fashion advice along with your clothing. (Hello, upsell!)
To become a seller yourself, first download the Poshmark app. Then you can create your own listing using Gary’s advice.
For each sale, Poshmark charges a commission fee. For sales $15 and under, there’s a flat $2.95 fee. For everything over $15, the commission jumps to 20% of the sale price.
The good news is Poshmark handles shipping for free. It will send you a pre-labeled package for you to load your clothes into and send to the buyer.
If this model works for you, you can stick to it. Or your profits from reselling vintage clothes can fund the overhead to start buying and fixing up more items.
In-Person Assistant
Apps such as Instacart highlight the demand for people to perform everyday errands, like grocery shopping, for those who don’t have the time.
What they shouldn’t do is discourage you from starting your own business as an in-person assistant. In fact, these apps can serve as templates for tailoring a more sensible, local business.
Pro Tip
Study side-gig apps, and use their customers’ pain points as ways to strengthen your own business idea.
For example, Instacart only delivers groceries. Your business can run plenty of other related errands, and it doesn’t require your customers to download and use a different app for every task on their to-do list. Sure, you won’t be automatically matched with clients. But by this point in the guide, you should be a pro at landing recurring customers.
Another example to build upon is the service called Papa. It’s a budding app that pairs college students with seniors who need help around the house, transportation or even tech lessons. Great idea, right? Except there are plenty of seniors who need assistance but don’t have the technological skills to download the app or apply through the website.
That’s where you come in: the neighborhood assistant who doesn’t require tedious apps. As you collect client referrals, you can spread your services to other neighborhoods. Or, you could opt to be more niche and scout out retirement complexes where your services could be more centralized and in-demand.
Do you feel overloaded with examples of business ideas? Good. You’re ready to get started and get your brain flowing with all the potential opportunities out there. None of these recommendations are ready-made business plans, and they’ll require a little tweaking to make them your own. The important thing is that you narrow down the ideas that work best for you.
Once you’ve got a few great business ideas in mind, you’ll be ready to explore the next stages of starting a business.

Second Shift Blogger Chelsea Connor Shares What Makes Her Tick
She’s covered three presidential elections, worked for the Canadian Prime Minister, and traveled around the world. Today meet another one of our newest copywriters, Chelsea Connor, as fellow member, Noelle Abarelli, interviews her.
Noelle: In addition to being a new contributor to the Second Shift blog, you’re also a member at large of The Second Shift. Tell me about the journey that led you to the site.
Chelsea: I’ve always been a working woman trying to have it all! I started working for NBC News at age 18 while attending college at NYU full time. From there, I took a role as a political consultant in New York City, which eventually led to a position working for the Canadian government. When that position wound down, I jumped at the chance to return to NBC to cover the 2016 U.S. election.
Needless to say, that was an exciting election to cover. When it was over, I returned to my job with the Canadian government, and many of my friends commented that, “I must be glad to be out of the U.S,” but I wasn’t. I felt a real need to return home and be a part of a movement that gives voices to people who weren’t heard in the last election process. I wound up returning to New York and taking a position with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU, UFCW). Today I’m focused on building the 21st century labor movement, which means helping U.S. workers fight for a union voice, fair wages and safe working conditions.
I joined The Second Shift a few months ago as a way to supplement my income. My partner is a retail worker, and we have seen firsthand that job stability isn’t a given in the industry. The work I take on via The Second Shift helps us keep a roof over our heads. He’s nearly seven feet tall and eats a lot – it gets expensive!
Noelle: What excites you most about being a member of this community?
Chelsea: I’m excited to be a part of a community of women. I work in a male dominated field on a daily basis, and The Second Shift offers me a great opportunity to network with other professional women. I also like that I can find extra work that aligns with my skill set and the hours I have available.
Noelle: What’s your experience been like since joining The Second Shift – have you landed any interesting projects?
Chelsea: I’m really just getting started. Thus far, the site has opened my eyes to the kinds of freelance opportunities out there and helped me hone my pitch. I also secured the opportunity to write for this blog through the site!
Noelle: What advice do you have for other members just getting started?
Chelsea: Read our blog! It’s going to be packed with helpful hints from real women trying to do it all. Each contributor has unique experiences and perspectives; our combined knowledge will give you insight into many tips and tricks.
Noelle: What kind of content can we expect to come our way from you over the next few months?
Chelsea: As a former journalist with a news background, you can definitely expect to see some of my posts responding to real time news and events. I’m also fascinated by generational differences. What success looks like for women today is so much different than what it looked like for my mother or my grandmother. I plan to explore those differences a bit, as well as some of the success I’ve had getting my voice heard in a male dominated field.
Noelle: I can tell from this conversation that you are an amazing journalist, communicator and writer. But I’m wondering if you have any secret talents you haven’t told me about?
Chelsea: Well it’s not a huge secret, but I love to cook! I know a lot of working women don’t want to come home and cook, but I love walking in the door and heading to the kitchen. It probably helps that my partner doesn’t mind cleaning up my messes! I’ve even won a few food competitions, like a mac & cheese cook off at one of the comedy clubs my partner performs at.
Noelle: Okay, let’s say when we finish this interview, you step outside and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million. What would you do?
Chelsea: I’d definitely open Chelsea Connor Communications! I’d love to build a company that believes in its clients and its people. My experience has been that there are firms that are passionate about their clients, but don’t treat their employees great, and firms that are more about making lots of money from their clients and going over the top with perks. I’d love to create a real family-oriented PR company and combine it with traveling all over the world!
Noelle: Please take me with you Chelsea! Thanks for your time today, I know we all look forward to hearing more from you.

10 Star Wars Lessons That Will Make You a Better Gamer
Now more than ever, there’s a whole lot of Star Wars out there for every kind of fan. Whether you’re into the books, TV, comics, or just the medium where everything began — movies. That doesn’t mean it all has to remain separated, though. Stories, history, and sometimes even lessons can carry over from one movie, book, or what have you to the next. In some cases, there are even lessons to be learned from Star Wars movies that apply right back into Star Wars games. And so here we’ve compiled a list of just some of the lessons that will make Star Wars moviegoers into better Star Wars gamers.
1. Assemble the Right Team
From The Force Awakens to Rogue One, Star Wars is almost always about teamwork. In fact, this whole Star Wars thing started (at least in real-world time) with Leia, Luke, Han, and Chewie in A New Hope coming together all those decades ago. Their message of cooperation is still applicable today, even in games. Games like Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, for instance, which tasks players with assembling squads from…a galaxy of heroes. Whether they be bruisers, combat support, or healers, it’s best to have a healthy mix of allies for every situation.
2. Use Cover Sensibly
This tip is a lot less inspirational than “teamwork prevails,” but just as pragmatic. In the dense clouds of blaster fire common to games like Star Wars Battlefront, you’re going to want people you can trust by your side. You also want to not get shot. Anyone who’s ever fought a stormtrooper will tell you that the best way to do this is by keeping your head down, and moving only when it’s safe. Of course, if you’re one with the Force, and the Force is with you like Rogue One’s Chirrut Îmwe, there are special circumstances. Note, however, that things didn’t go so well for those less Force adept rebels near Chirrut in the movie.
3. There’s Always a Weakness
A New Hope taught us that even something as all-powerful and seemingly impenetrable as the Death Star has its weaknesses. Rogue One taught us that sometimes those weak links are people — perhaps due to a guilty conscience, or just having a conscience in the first place. Whatever the case, this axiom is just as true in games. Whether you’re looking for a lightly defended flank in Battlefront, or need to make a fragile enemy healer your priority in Galaxy of Heroes, survey your opponent to find their weakness. Once you’ve found it, that’s when you strike.
4. Don’t Underestimate Your Enemy
Say what you will about Ewoks, but they were effective. The little critters took on something like a platoon of hardened, better-equipped enemies with sticks, rocks, and ropes. There are a lot of lessons to take away from Return of the Jedi’s final battle — such as not to attack an enemy on their home turf — but one that seems especially poignant for the battle-ready teddies is not to underestimate your enemies. Especially in role-playing games like The Old Republic, where an opponent’s skill is hidden behind invisible numbers selected by the developers. Just because something looks innocuous, doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous. Even in games.
5. The Dark Side Has its Perks
Listen. We’re not here to advocate turning towards the dark side (down that path lays fear, anger, hate, etc.). Ever since Return of the Jedi, though, we’ve all had to come to terms with the fact that the dark side is more than just red lightsabers and bad moods. It comes with further perks like, say, being able to channel actual lightning from one’s fingertips. In games like The Old Republic, where you have the option to choose between the light and the dark, make sure you consider that fact before brushing evil aside.
6. Sometimes You Need to Take the Initiative
It’s easy to imagine what would have happened if Jyn Erso and the other members of Rogue One hadn’t obtained the Death Star plans. Luke Skywalker would never have destroyed the battle station. Galaxy-wide destruction and oppression would have followed. The bad guys would have won.
Yet Jyn could have never obtained those plans if she’d succumbed to rebel infighting and indecision. Sometimes you have to take the initiative, and do what’s necessary, even if it’s unpopular. In games like Star Wars Battlefront that can mean being the first person to sprint towards an objective. In The Old Republic, it might be using an unorthodox skill at just the right time. Whatever the case, sometimes it’s up to you to take that first step.
7. Don’t Give in to Anger
After having his hand cut off, learning his mentor lied to him, and discovering the man he spent the better part of two movies fighting was his father, you’d think Luke Skywalker would hold a grudge after The Empire Strikes Back. Not so. He comes back wiser, calmer, and smarter in Return of the Jedi (and looking pretty sharp in all-black). After which he turns all of his energy towards bringing his father back into the light.
In Battlefront, The Old Republic, or any other multiplayer game for that matter, don’t let trash talk get you down. Instead, find your inner calm and turn it right back around at them by playing better than ever.
8. You’re No Good to Anyone Dead
Granted, Boba Fett didn’t have Han Solo’s best interests at heart in The Empire Strikes Back. Still, we can easily stretch his famous proclamation that Solo was no good to him dead for more beneficent reasons. Taking risks is a part of playing almost any game, but that doesn’t mean you need to take unnecessary risks. That’s especially true in classic Star Wars games. From X-Wing and TIE Fighter to Super Star Wars, death is often a much harsher penalty than games with modern auto-saves and checkpoints.
9. Try to See the Best in People
Here’s another tip for role-playing games, in which you’re often asked to trust people who…don’t seem that trustworthy. Sometimes that’s dark side users in The Old Republic and its precursors, Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel. Sometimes it’s scoundrels, mercenaries, and even small-time criminals. In story-driven games, potential allies are bound to have things in their past you might not agree with.
That doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a second chance, though. One such example from the movies is FN-2187, a.k.a. Finn from The Force Awakens. Even after spending most of his life with the First Order, Finn becomes a force for good because one Poe Dameron is willing to trust and believe him. In some Star Wars games, you’ll need to be just as trusting in order to progress.
10. Equipment Matters
Where would Star Wars be without the Millenium Falcon? Besides being the most iconic starship in the franchise, it’s carried our heroes through some of the biggest battles in the galaxy. It was used to rescue Luke in Empire. Lando Calrissian used it to destroy the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. And more recently, Rey and Finn would never have made it off Jakku without her.
In Star Wars games, reliable equipment is equally important. That means equipping your avatar with all the best gear and weapons in The Old Republic. In Galaxy of Heroes, filling your party’s equipment slots is even necessary to make them progress. And in Star Wars Battlefront, you might literally learn to fly the Falcon itself against a haze of incoming TIE fighters. Sure, it’s important to trust your teammates and to keep a cool head. Sometimes, though, you just want a good blaster at your side, kid.
